Sarah Dowie, MP for Invercargill invites you to a firearms forum with Chris Bishop, MP for Hutt South and National's Police Spokesperson.
In early February the Police published a series of proposals to overhaul firearms administration in New Zealand. The government is also currently reviewing and proposing changes to the Arms Act.
As a result, Chris Bishop, MP for Hutt South and National’s Police Spokesperson is touring the country consulting licensed firearms owners and the wider public across New Zealand. We invite you to come along to our local meeting and have your say.
You can read the full proposals here.
Essentially the Police are proposing to:
- To disestablish hundreds of field-based arms officer and firearms licensing vettors, replacing them with fewer new positions at lower pay scales;
- That all firearms activity and personnel managed by and reporting to the Arms Act Service Delivery Group;
- That firearms administration tasks will be moved away from districts and towards central management; and
- Establish a new national Service Centre, based in Kapiti, to manage end-to-end firearms administration.
As well as this, the government are reviewing the Arms Act itself. There’s never been a more important time to come and have input into National’s policies.
