Chris Bishop, National List MP based in the Hutt Valley, has today launched Free the CBD! – a new campaign calling on the Hutt City Council to introduce 60 minutes free parking in the Lower Hutt CBD.

“The current situation in the CBD is very unfair on local retailers. Queensgate offers a massive four hours free parking. Jackson St parking is also free – as well as at the shops at Waterloo and Maungaraki,” Mr Bishop says.

“CBD retailers unsurprisingly find it hard to compete when everywhere has free parking except for them.

“Introducing 60 minutes free parking will help revitalise the CBD. One of the things I hear frequently from Hutt residents is that we need to liven up the CBD. I totally agree – and while free parking is not a silver bullet, it will definitely help.

“Free parking will encourage people to park in the CBD – and make them more likely to shop and dine. It’s silly that the one part of the Hutt that’s struggling is the one area where we don’t have free parking.

“In 2010 the Council made parking free in the CBD in order to boost local retailers – if it was good enough then it can do it again now.

“The website www.freehuttparking.nz has gone live today with a petition to the Council. I’m encouraging as many Hutt residents as possible to go to the website and leave their name. The more signatures we get, the louder the message to the Council will be.

“It’s time to Free the CBD,” concluded Mr Bishop.
