Thank you very much for the invitation to speak briefly to you all today.
I’ve been thinking about Hon Kiritapu Allan a lot in the last couple of weeks, particularly today. Kiri and I were at law school together here. When she became a MP in 2017 I said hello to her at a function and she said oh yes Chris, I remember you, we were at law school together. She said “I was the rebel from the East Coast who sat down the back. You were the right-wing loud mouth who sat down the front.”

I hope this email finds you well as the week draws to a close - just a quick note from me to let you know about my new role in the new Parliament and what I've been up to over the past couple of weeks. The new Parliament hasn't even been sworn in yet but there's been plenty to do, particularly in the Hutt! See below for the latest on the Airport Flyer and community safety issues I've been working on recently. Parliament opens on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 November but as you can tell from the news at the moment - everyone is back into it already!

In 2017 Hutt South elected a National MP for the first time ever and I’ve worked hard every day since then to live up to the faith shown in me. But it wasn't enough and on Saturday Hutt South returned to Labour with a massive swing. I worked as hard as I possibly could during the campaign to withstand it, but as they say, when the swing is on, it’s on. National polled just 22.8% of the party vote in the Hutt, with Labour polling 54.3% - nearly double the National vote.

As I write this Parliament is sitting under what we call "urgency" to advance some legislation before the election. It's unusual to be here on a Friday (usually it's Tuesday to Thursday) but it's a sure sign that the election is not far away - 85 days! (although voting opens before then).

As Bill Lawry, the great Aussie cricket commentator used to say, "it's all happening!" A busy couple of weeks at Parliament and in the Hutt, and there's just 100 days to go until the election. Like everyone, I was delighted when we moved to "Level 1" of the COVID response on Monday, and there are now no active cases of COVID-19 left in New Zealand!

It's been an exciting few days in politics! On Friday the National Party caucus met and elected Todd Muller as Leader, and Nikki Kaye as Deputy Leader. Todd is a good friend of mine and I know he will do a fantastic job. His first speech has had brilliant feedback and you can read it here. By the way, the Bishmullet came off for the caucus meeting after eight days and $8400 raised (read more below).
